CAD Webinar Series (XII): Designing cooperating interactions of AVs with other road users (InterACT project)

A major challenge in the development of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) is understanding how these vehicles should interact with the human road user to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow.

InterACT aims to understand how interactions unfold between all traffic participants, in order to ensure the safe integration of AVs into mixed traffic environments in future transport networks. With the aim to discuss the topic, the XII installment of the CAD webinar series will be held on 25 September 2018 from 14.00 to 15.00 CET under the title “Designing cooperating interactions of automated vehicles with other road users – the latest developments of the interACT EU project”.

In this second webinar, the core system research and development teams will join forces to present their progress on how the real‐world observations and modeling, as well as the humans’ intention recognition elements of WP2, are being integrated in the design of the “Cooperation and Communication Planning Unit” (CCPU). The CCPU is the central core of the interACT AV: taking into account the gestures, the anticipated intentions and the predicted behaviour of the other traffic participants, the CCPU will develop an expectation-conforming, safe plan for the future motion of the AV and its interactions with other road users and its on-board user.

This plan will be used as an input for the actual, time-synchronised planning of the AV motion and the sequential control of the explicit HMI elements. More specifically, the webinar will cover system background knowledge focusing on system design and will present work in progress on advanced pedestrian recognition research and rule-based reasoning for situation understanding and classification.
