The CAD Knowledge Base – the key to unlock research on cooperative, connected and automated mobility

In Europe, there are a lot of discussions around the full deployment of cooperative, connected and automated mobility (CCAM). Our involvement in European research and innovation projects is key to make the users’ voice heard in the development of new mobility technologies.

Even at this stage of the development, users have a lot to say about CCAM. They are concerned about the safety and reliability of automated driving functions and they lack information about their application. They are concerned about the protection of their data and liability in case of accidents. Recent research from the Automobile Club Association shows that users still very much grasp automated mobility as a variant of our current “driver-led” system: where there is still a driver, with a certain level of liability and a driving license is still needed. In order to deploy such technologies, the users buy-in is critical. This is why we promote a user-centred approach towards research, testing and pre-deployment of CCAM. As part of this commitment, we are proud to contribute to the coordination of the dialogue on CCAM as leader of the CAD Knowledge Base within the ARCADE Coordination and Support Action.

Since its launch in August 2019, the CAD Knowledge Base serves as key repository for knowledge and experiences on CCAM in Europe. Furthermore, an ongoing cooperation of the CAD Knowledge Base with the Single Platform for open road testing and pre-deployment of cooperative, connected, automated and autonomous mobility enables a constant feedback loop with the EU Member States, industry, researchers and user organisations.

By collecting knowledge and experiences, the CAD Knowledge Base plays a pivotal role in coordinating the results from European research on CCAM, thus fostering a common understanding of the roadblocks society has to overcome to enable coordinated, connected and automated mobility that is safe, user-centred, environmentally sound as well as beneficial to our economy and society.

In the months ahead, the CAD Knowledge Base will evolve with the feedback from this ongoing cooperation. We will include information on national research and testing, collect lessons learned from CCAM projects and create a tailored experience for different stakeholder groups to make the CAD Knowledge Base as accessible as possible. To make the most out of this undertaking, the dialogue with all stakeholders in CCAM will be vital. FIA Region I will continue to commit to this dialogue to ensure that European CCAM research will result in a safe, affordable and sustainable mobility for all.
