Volvo’s new autonomous transport business

12 November 2019

Swedish manufacturing company Volvo has announced that they will start a new business area by January 2020 called “Volvo Autonomous Solutions”. The new business area will foster the development of autonomous transport solutions. Additionally, Volvo plans to release its financial resources specifically dedicated to self-driving trucks to offer greater transparency to their shareholders.

Most of Volvo efforts in the self-driving area have been focused on bringing autonomous trucks to market. The company has a partnership with ferry and logistics giant DFDS to use Volvo’s self-driving, connected and electric vehicle Vera to transport goods between a logistics hub and a port in Sweden. In the meantime, in Norway autonomous Volvo FH trucks are being used for transporting limestone along a 5 km stretch.

These projects reflect Volvo’s self-set vision to provide transport solutions that are safer and have a lower environmental impact. The company works on plans to offer autonomous solutions in situations with the need to move large volumes of goods and materials on pre-defined routes, in repetitive flows.
