Human Factors is the discipline of optimizing human performance in the workplace and concerns the interaction between people and environment, procedures, machines (including both software and hardware) as well as other people. Human Machine Interaction/Interface (HMI) incorporates the interaction between humans and different types of machines and system components in order to reach a common goal. Human Factors work is necessary to ensure intended effects of the functions are reached by taking both technology and human’s intent and actions into account as well as technical and human limitations. The Human Factors thematic area concerns not only humans in the actual vehicles but also humans around the vehicle as well as humans in surrounding vehicles. Examples of automation specific topics are: Human modelling, Harmonized in-vehicle design strategies as well as design strategies for interaction of automated vehicles with external road users, User Centered Design evaluation methodology, Remote control operation, Human state assessment.
